Passenger Seat Position Sensor Circuit Range/Performance Problem

The seat position sensor tells the car's computer how far the passenger seat is from the dashboard. If this sensor is reading incorrectly, the computer won't know if the seat is in a safe position.

The airbag control module receives a voltage signal from the seat position sensor, which should vary as the seat moves. If the signal is outside the expected range, usually between 0.5V to 4.5V depending on the position, the code is thrown.

Don't just throw parts at it. Walk through these in order — each step tells you whether to keep going or stop and fix what you found.

1. 11. Inspect the wiring and connectors for damage or corrosion around the passenger seat. Decision: If damaged, repair/replace. If not, proceed to step 2.
2. 22. Use a multimeter to measure voltage at the passenger seat position sensor connector. Expected: 0.5V to 4.5V. Decision: If within range, sensor is likely good. If out of range, replace the sensor.
3. 33. Check for any loose connections at the airbag control module. Decision: If loose, secure connections. If secure, further diagnosis needed on wiring.
