Battery Voltage Low

Your vehicle's battery is not supplying enough voltage, which is usually under 9 volts when the system expects at least 12.4 volts while running.

The powertrain control module (PCM) monitors battery voltage from the battery terminal. If it reads below 9 volts for more than a set time (usually over 5 seconds), it triggers this code.

Don't just throw parts at it. Walk through these in order — each step tells you whether to keep going or stop and fix what you found.

1. 11. Check battery voltage using a multimeter. Voltage should be 12.4 to 14.7 volts with engine running. If not, note the reading and proceed to step 2. Decision: Is the voltage below 12.4 volts?
2. 22. Inspect battery connections for corrosion or loose terminals. Clean or tighten as necessary, then retest battery voltage. Decision: Is the voltage now correct?
3. 33. If voltage is still low, test the alternator output while the engine is running. Use a multimeter to check voltage at the alternator. Expected output should be at least 13.5 volts. Decision: Is alternator output in range?
4. 44. If alternator is faulty, replace it. If the alternator is fine, check for parasitic draw by disconnecting the negative battery terminal and testing draw on the battery. It should be under 50 milliamps. Decision: Are draw levels acceptable?
