Battery Voltage Low

The vehicle's computer is seeing that the battery voltage is dropping below the normal operating range, typically less than 12.4 volts when the engine is off and under 13.5 volts when running.

The engine control module (ECM) monitors the battery voltage through a dedicated sensor or via the onboard computer. When the voltage falls below preset levels (usually under 12 volts for more than 15 seconds), it registers a fault.

Don't just throw parts at it. Walk through these in order — each step tells you whether to keep going or stop and fix what you found.

1. 11. Check the battery voltage with a multimeter. Measure with the engine off and then with the engine running. Is the voltage below 12.4V off or 13.5V running? If yes, proceed to step 2. If no, the code may be intermittent or a false reading.
2. 22. Inspect battery terminals for corrosion or loose connections. Are the terminals clean and tight? If yes, proceed to step 3. If no, clean and secure terminals. Clear code and retest.
3. 33. Perform a load test on the battery using a battery tester. Is the battery able to hold a charge under load? If yes, proceed to step 4. If no, replace the battery.
4. 44. Check the alternator output while the engine is running. Is it supplying proper voltage (13.5-14.5V)? If yes, check wiring to the ECM. If no, replace the alternator.
