Clutch Switch Circuit Malfunction

The clutch switch tells the computer if the clutch is pressed or not. If it’s faulty, the car may not know when to shift correctly.

The ECM expects to see a change in voltage from the clutch switch. When the clutch is pressed, voltage should drop to around 0 volts; when released, it should rise to battery voltage (around 12-14 volts).

Don't just throw parts at it. Walk through these in order — each step tells you whether to keep going or stop and fix what you found.

1. 11. Visually inspect the clutch switch and its wiring for any visible damage or disconnection. Found issues? Repair as needed. Decision point: If repairs are made, clear the code and road test; if no issues found, proceed to step 2.
2. 22. Check for continuity in the clutch switch circuit. With the clutch pedal depressed, you should measure 0 ohms between the pin at the clutch switch and ground. If no continuity exists, replace the clutch switch. Decision point: If continuity is present, proceed to step 3.
3. 33. Measure the voltage at the connector of the clutch switch while the pedal is operated. You should see the voltage change from battery voltage to around 0 volts. No change? Check for wiring issues or replace the connector if corroded. Decision point: If voltage changes as expected, ECM may be faulty.
