Engine Oil Temperature Sensor Circuit

The engine oil temperature sensor measures how hot your engine oil is. If it's too cold or too hot for too long, the sensor or the wiring to it could be faulty, misinforming the engine control module (ECM).

The ECM expects a voltage signal from the oil temperature sensor, usually between 0.5V (cold) and 4.5V (hot). If it reads below 0.5V or above 4.5V, it triggers the fault code.

Don't just throw parts at it. Walk through these in order — each step tells you whether to keep going or stop and fix what you found.

1. 11. Check the engine oil level; ensure it is within operating range (between minimum and maximum on dipstick). Decision: If not, correct oil level and retest.
2. 22. Inspect the wiring and connectors at the oil temperature sensor for damage or corrosion. Decision: If found, repair or replace as necessary and retest.
3. 33. Use a multimeter to check the voltage output of the oil temperature sensor. Decision: If voltage is outside of 1.5-2.5V at normal temperature, continue to replacement procedure; if normal, the fault may lie in the ECM.
4. 44. Replace the oil temperature sensor if steps 1-3 did not resolve the issue. Decision: If code returns, consider ECM diagnosis.
