Engine Coolant Temperature Above Normal Operating Range

The sensor that measures the coolant temperature is picking up a reading that’s above what's normal, usually over 240°F (116°C). It means the engine might be overheating, which can cause damage if not addressed.

Don't just throw parts at it. Walk through these in order — each step tells you whether to keep going or stop and fix what you found.

1. 11. Check the engine coolant level. Add coolant if low, then retest. Decision: If coolant was low but still shows high temp, go to step 2. If coolant is normal, go to step 3.
2. 22. Scan for codes. If SPN 3381 is the only code and no other related codes appear, proceed to step 3.
3. 33. Inspect the coolant temperature sensor connector and wiring for damage or corrosion. Repair as needed. Decision: If repaired, clear codes and test drive. If the code comes back, go to step 4.
4. 44. Check the operation of the thermostat. Measure the coolant temperature at the thermostat housing. Decision: If the temp remains too high with the engine running, replace the thermostat. If coolant temp seems normal, go to step 5.
5. 55. Inspect the water pump for signs of failure. If the water pump isn’t circulating coolant properly, replace it.
