Water in Fuel (WIF) Indicator - Active

The system has detected water in the fuel, which can cause engine performance issues and damage components.

The Engine Control Module (ECM) receives signals from the water detection sensor that indicate moisture levels in the fuel are above normal thresholds. This is usually a binary reading: either water is detected or it is not, often triggered at certain percentage levels of water in the fuel.

Don't just throw parts at it. Walk through these in order — each step tells you whether to keep going or stop and fix what you found.

1. 11. Check the fuel system for visible signs of water contamination (e.g., contaminated fuel filter or fluid separation in the tank). Decide if contamination is present.
2. 22. Inspect the wiring and connector of the water detection sensor for damage, corrosion, or loose connections. Repair or replace as necessary and check for trouble code reappearance.
3. 33. If no visible issues, test the water detection sensor using a multimeter. Expected resistance should be within the manufacturer's specified range. If out of range, replace the sensor.
4. 44. Replace the fuel filter and add a fuel additive designed to emulsify water if contamination is confirmed. Test drive and monitor for code reappearance. If the code returns, investigate for further fuel quality problems.
